US judge: Woman who sent back Russian boy must pay

On Thursday a judge in Tennessee said Torry Hansen must begin making the child support payments in June and continue to pay until the boy, who is now 9 years old, turns 18. Circuit Court Judge Lee Russell said the $150,000 Hansen must pay includes damages for breach of contract, legal fees and support for the boy.

Hansen sent Artyom Saveliev back to Russia in April of 2010 with a letter saying the child was disturbed, violent and she didn’t want him anymore. The incident created an international uproar and prompted

Humane Society releases video of Tenn. Walking Horse abuse

It was all done in an effort to accentuate the well-known, high leg kick of the Tennessee Walking Horse, animal rights advocates say. And, it all unfolds on an undercover video.

The Humane Society of the United States released the footage Thursday to urge the horse industry, the U.S. Department of Agriculture and Congress to crack down on “soring.” The practice is illegal under federal and state law.

Tennessee Arts Academy To Offer New Fine Arts Assessment Training

The Tennessee Fine Arts Assessment was successfully piloted this year in the Memphis City School system, and is currently in the approval process by the Tennessee Department of Education. Pending approval by the State Board of Education, this assessment system will be available as an option for all Tennessee school districts, grades K-12, beginning in the 2012-2013 school year. Undercover video shows individuals hitting horses, applying chemicals

(CNN) — An undercover video shows horses being struck with sticks and subjected to “soring,” an illegal process in which chemicals are placed on their lower legs in an effort to induce the signature Tennessee Walking Horse high-stepping gait.

The graphic video shows trainer Jackie L. McConnell of Whitter Stables of Collierville, Tennessee, and others subjecting show horses to practices that were banned 40 years ago. One image shows a writhing horse being subjected to a whip at McConnell’s barn. Another receives a shock to the head.

MURFREESBORO, Tenn. – A homeless woman is accused of stabbing herself and then filing a fake domestic violence report to get into a women’s shelter.

“It’s real difficult being homeless especially when there’s not enough shelters for women,” said Ashley Basham during an exclusive jailhouse interview.

Basham told police her partner had attacked her with a knife and police placed her in a domestic violence shelter for her own protection. She had sustained several stab wounds to her leg.

FAYETTEVILLE, Ark. (AP) – DJ Baxendale allowed just two hits and Matt Reynolds and Derrick Bleeker had three RBIs apiece to lead Arkansas to an 8-0 victory over Tennessee in Knoxville.

Reynolds’ homer came in a two-run first inning that gave the Razorbacks (37-17, 14-14 Southeastern Conference) an early 2-0 lead on Thursday. Bleeker led off the second inning with a home run, and Reynolds added a two-run double as Arkansas widened its lead to 6-0.

Reynolds was 3 for 5 and Derrick Bleeker was 3 for 4 for the Razorbacks.
