The Cambria kick-off party for Nashville Fashion Week gathered the city’s finest-clad for a night of cocktails and at Suzy Wong’s House of Yum.  Hosted by Cheryl Tiegs, the soiree feted Manuel – Nashville’s “Rhinestone Rembrandt.”

The Pinnacle venue for the debut fashion shows had set high expectations for the rest of Nashville Fashion Week events, and Suzy Wong’s did not disappoint.  A valet waited at the end of a red carpet – velvet ropes and all – to receive partiers as they hit the scene.  Inside, the deliciously camp-inspired restaurant morphed into a d club as music throbbed and cliques cozied up inside the posh candlelit booths.  Models wearing Manuel’s custom creations surveyed the crowd from their vantage point on the leather banquettes lining the walls.

It wasn’t hard to tell where the action was.  As you pushed past the well-attended bar into an anteroom the crowd grew thicker still as fashionistas jostled  to congratulate Manuel and pose with Cheryl Tiegs against the Cambria backdrop.  The man of the hour was all smiles, speaking with each and every person who approached him over the din and posing for countless pictures with press and party-goers alike.  For a man with such a reputation to precede him – he is, after all, responsible for The King’s gold lame suit and Johnny Cash’s midnight wardrobe – he was intensely humble and seemed to appreciate each and every person present.

As the night wore on, the party never flagged.  Drinks kept flowing, and waitresses brought the most incredible small bites on trays to keep everyone’s energy up.  A favorite was the fried rice, served in tiny Chinese take-out boxes with chopsticks, and the yakitori skewers.  By the time we left well after 2:00, there was still a crowd on the dance floor.  Party on, Wayne.

The Simms family opened the first Mimi’s Cafe in Anaheim, California. Son, Tom Simms, brought an innovative spirit in introducing a new type of restaurant concept that combined the quality, ambience and personal service of a dinner house with the convenience and value of a coffee shop. Father Arthur J. Simms brought his lifetime of experience in restaurants along with inspiration from his memorable time in Europe during WWII. Adam Baird is extremely passionate in his role as the Executive Chef for Mimi’s Cafe.  Chef Adam develops delicious new menu items for Mim’s that feature solid culinary techniques and fresh local ingredients.  Mim’s guests and critics alike have recognized Chef Adam’s effort with a variety of favorable reviews and mentions in public opinion surreys.

Chef Adam is a graduate of the Culinary Institute of America and is a junior sommelier certificate holder with a passion for wine and food pairings. The City Cafe was opened  in 1900 by Dorsey Cantrell in downtown Murfreesboro.   The City Cafe is known for its history, good food, friendly locals, and great environment.  The cafe experienced a ownership change back in 2007 with new owner Scott Perkins taking over in September.

The City Cafe is a relaxed environment and is really just as much a meeting place as a restaurant.  You will immediately notice the history of the city cafe once you go inside.  You’ll see picture filled walls of previous owners, old photographs of other local business owners, as well as old time decor.  The décor brings back memories of 1950′s diners and simpler times.  The City Cafe has held political parties for the regulars every election year, along with various other societies in the community.

As for the food, expect your eggs to be cooked to order with biscuits and country ham at breakfast. Count on one of the area’s best cheeseburgers at lunch. And enjoy comforting plates of fried or barbecued chicken, salmon croquettes, liver and onions, and roast beef and gravy at lunch and dinner, with yeast rolls, corn cakes and locally raised vegetables on the side.  The menu changes daily which keeps customers coming back.  The City Cafe  serves breakfast, lunch and dinner daily.

Bluegrass music jam sessions are a late Saturday morning happening.   Every town has a morning “coffee spot” where the local gather to discuss the great issues of our time, the day’s events and gossip. City Cafe has outlasted a number of competitors and is the place for a solid meal and as much of the local gossip as you want.  The community table is a great source of commentary and news.

The City Café has the look and feel of “mom and pop” diners throughout the South, but the main difference with the City Cafe is that regardless of how long they have been in business, more and more new customers flow in and help keep the community circle intact.

This is a great family business. There is no other barbeque like it anywhere in town. The staff is friendly and will likely spark up a conversation with you while you wait. If you happen to go on Tuesday with the specials running, dont be alarmed at the huge crowd. The service also is extremely fast. It’s a great place to sit back enjoy lunch or dinner with your friends and relax. If you like sweet tea, you’ll be an instant fan.  You cannot go wrong with anything you order here. You can also call in an order and it will be ready when you get there!  The catering service is also great for large meals and for tailgating too!

Slick Pig has a great atmosphere and a great place to sit back and see all the locals line up and catch up on the latest gossip. The ribs are made to taste smoky and the sauce is just the right consistency, not to heavy or tangy. The beans were smoky and sweet and the potato salad is always fresh and creamy.  You wont be disappointed if you visit Slick Pig.  They are one of the few locally owned business in Murfreesboro that still values good service, food, and prices.

The thing about medium-sized chains is that when first exposed to one of their locations, most people will assume that the store isn’t even part of a chain.  That certainly was my impression when first I walked through the door of McAlister’s.  In fact, it wasn’t until months later when I met someone who worked at one of their other locations that I realized that McAlister’s wsa a chain at all.  Their location did nothing to tip me off that I was in a chain location, and boy am I glad of it.

The first interesting thing I noticed about the store was the fact that there were no digital order taking machines.  Sure, they had cash registers, but they had the kind that amounted to a calculator affixed to a cash drawer, not a fancy-dancy computer setup.

The food was amazing, too.  Personally, I’m used to the dollar menu at whatever fast food restaurant I happen to patronize in a given day, so McAlister’s prices, for me, are a once-or-twice a month thing — not killer, but not cheap, either.  That said, the product easily justifies the price every time for me.

Oh, and speaking of the food . . . the menu is massive.  It probably would take weeks of eating three squares a day at McAlister’s to chew through the whole thing, and by the time you finished, you’d probably have to catch up on some new, local or seasonal dish.
