In the world of natural horsemanship, the names Cameron and Parelli require no introduction. And when these two great American cowboys roll into Murfreesboro, TN. on March 9th, for the 2012 International Road to the Horse World Championship, it is game on.

Cameron and Parelli, two men who have redefined the whole concept of colt-starting, will work together, competing against world-class horsemen from Australia and Canada, to win the title of “World Champions” for the United States.

“Road to the Horse is the most exciting equine event on the scene today,” said Cameron who is looking forward to partnering with Pat Parelli, a man he calls a great horseman and innovator.

Parelli reminds all of us that his partner for the 2012 event is already a past Road to the Horse Champion.

While the event is guaranteed to electrify students of natural horsemanship by the sheer volume of talent and experience on hand, the Road to the Horse event is also an integral part of the natural horsemanship revolution that is sweeping into all corners of the horse industry. And thats good news for horses.

Pat Parelli said, in fact, that is the best thing about The Road to the Horse competition. He said the event does for natural horsemanship what the Kentucky Derby does for thoroughbred racing. “It gets peoples attention and interest on natural horsemanship as a whole,” he said.

But dont kid yourself, Cameron and Parelli are playing to win. Both men have multiple decades of colt starting experience under their rodeo buckles and will prove formidable competition to the Australian and Canadian teams.

“We need to bring that championship home.” Cameron said. “This is right where it needs to be, in the USA.”

As young men, Parelli and Cameron came up through the rodeo circuit, riding rough stock, and each developed a deep love for horses. But early on, both men suspected the often violent methods used to “break” young horses was at least ineffective and unnecessary, if not wrong. Cameron and Parelli began their natural horsemanship journeys studying under legendary horseman Ray Hunt and Troy Henry.

“I always tried to work with a horse and not be abusive or rough. It was just an instinct,” said Cameron who is a member of the Texas Cowboy Hall of Fame and travels 44 weeks a year educating horse lovers nationwide.

“Its about love, language and leadership in equal doses,” said Parelli who founded a program that now boasts over 200,000 students in 35 countries. “Life is about relationships and its pretty hard to beat that formula.”

Fans of Team USA are encouraged to fly their colors and support Cameron and Parelli in person in Murfreesboro, TN. While other countries certainly develop great horsemen, the worlds greatest come from America.

Tickets are now on sale for the 2012 International Road to the Horse competition. Tickets range from $80-$200 for all three days. VIP ticket costs are $285 in addition to regular seating costs. Limited charity seats are $2500. Charity seats are limited seating in the middle of the arena among the action within the clinicians round pens. These seats allow one on one time with each clinician and the ability to hear and see everything that goes on and off the record.

For an annual fee of only $39.95, Nation members receive privileges such as advance ticket purchase opportunities, a special prime seating section, merchandise and apparel discounts, early admission to the event and an interactive Road to the Horse Nation website. To become a member, visit www.roadtothehorsenation.com

For detailed travel and schedule information or to buy tickets online visit www.roadtothehorse.com or call 1-877-772-5425 or 1-888-695-0888.

Road to the Horse

Road to the Horse, the World Championship of Colt-Starting is unlike any other event in the equine or entertainment industry. The three-day event will match six of the world’s best horse trainers and clinicians against one another as they train unbroken colts to ride in just a few hours in front of a packed live audience and television cameras. By combining education, edge-of-your-seat suspense, entertainment and the love of the horse, Road to the Horse has been responsible for solidifying the position of todays horsemanship heroes and launching the careers of tomorrows hottest new stars.

In the process, the event itself has become a catalyst for the advancement of natural horsemanship. Hosted by Rick Lamb, of RFD-TVs The Horse Show with Rick Lamb, spectators are guaranteed not only to have a good time, but also to walk away with training knowledge that will improve their relationship with horses. The event is supported by title sponsor Western Horseman and in association with AQHA.

Road to the Horse is proud to partner with many outstanding companies across the equine industry including Road to the Horse presenting sponsor, Western Horseman and strategic partner AQHA along with Nutrena, WW Livestock, Callaway Farms Manufacturing, Prichards Distillery, Extreme Mustang Makeover, TWHBEA, Quarter Horse News, Western Shooting Horse Magazine, Horsecity.com, Horses Magazine, and Hoofbeats Magazine.

ABC News broadcasts – Week of Sept. 5. During the week of Sept. 5, all ABC News broadcasts will air special coverage to commemorate the 10th anniversary of 9/11, including World News With Diane Sawyer, Good Morning America, Nightline and 20/20.

Today — NBC, Sept. 5-9, 7am ET. Starting Sept. 5, NBC’s morning showToday will incorporate 9/11 coverage and programming into its show each day throughout the week. On Sept. 9, Matt Lauer will be live from Ground Zero for a split show with Ann Curry live from Studio 1A. Matt will give viewers a tour inside the new 1 World Trade Center, formerly known as Freedom Tower, that is still under construction. The show will also take a look back at some of the children of 9/11 victims that were first met 10 years ago, to catch up with them and find out what their lives are like today.

Access Hollywood — Syndicated (check local listings), Sept. 5-9.Throughout the week, Access Hollywood will feature special celebrity interviews as stars reflect upon their experiences and memories of Sept. 11, 2001. Billy Bush sits down with Dan Rather to hear about his emotional post-9/11 interview on Late Show With David Letterman; Rob Lowe talks about traveling with a doomed flight crew on a trip before the attacks; Liza Minnelli remembers the spirit of the crowd at Shea Stadium at the first Mets game played in New York after 9/11; and more.

PBS NewsHour – PBS, Sept. 5, 6pm ET. All this week, PBS NewsHour will air a special series of stories that examine how our world has changed in the decade since 9/11. These stories air in the show’s regular timeslot, and will lead up to a special one-hour presentation of America Remembers — 9/11 on Sept. 11 (see later in this post). Tonight’s episode looks at how the students and teachers of P.S. 150 are reflecting on the attacks. Filmmaker Jacques Menasche had a son in first grade there and in his film The Class of 9/11(which is excerpted here) he now revisits his son’s schoolmates and teachers to discuss what they remember about 9/11 and how the experience has affected them.

When Pop Culture Saved America — BIO Channel, Sept. 5, 8pm ET. This two-hour documentary looks at the days and months following the 9/11 attacks to show how the non-news media pitched in to bring the nation together. Comedians, singers, actors, entertainers all did their part with concerts, telethons and specials to help bring the nation back to the “new normal.” AIRS COMMERCIAL-FREE.

PBS NewsHour – PBS, Sept. 6, 6pm ET. Science correspondent Miles O’Brien reports on the effort to build the world’s safest skyscraper on the site of the Twin Towers in a segment produced in collaboration with the PBS series NOVA. The segment takes an in-depth look at the science and technology behind the new 1 World Trade Center. Additionally, an architect from the University of Maryland discusses new buildings constructed with the design to make people feel safer.

Targeting Bin Laden – History, Sept. 6, 8pm ET. This two-hour special looks inside the dedicated effort to hunt and kill Osama bin Laden, exploring the historical ramifications for President Obama’s administration, as well as looking at the role of the men and women who worked for many years over several administrations to make this possible. Historical footage, photographs and re-enactments — along with interviews including President Obama and others — help illustrate one of the most important missions in our nation’s history.

Frontline: Top Secret America — PBS, Sept. 6, 9pm ET (check local listings). The Frontline team that produced “Bush’s War,” “The Torture Question” and “Cheney’s Law” teams up with Pulitzer Prize-winning journalist Dana Priest to investigate the dark side of America’s “war on terror” over the last decade and to ask how a decade of fighting terrorism has reshaped our country, and whether it has made us any safer.

Each of the eight people profiled is mentioned in The 9/11 Commission Report — their unique experiences are drawn from the 1,742 footnotes of that report and offer critical detail to the tragic events of that day. They include ticket agents who checked in some of the terrorists, a maintenance technician who answered a call from one of the planes under attack, and the Lt. Col. in the Massachusetts Air National Guard, also a United Airlines pilot, who scrambled to provide defense for New York and faced the possibility of having to shoot down a passenger plane.

Saved (Sneak Peek) — Animal Planet, Sept. 7, 9pm ET/PT. This is a sneak peek of Animal Planet’s new series about how the emotional bond between humans and animals can sometimes transcend the traditional pet-owner relationship. This episode, “The Woolverton Family/The Haskell Family,” looks at how a Dalmatian named Blaze helped bring light to the family of two firefighter brothers who died responding to the World Trade Center attacks during the family’s darkest days, and how a 4-year-old girl, traumatized by the chaos around her following the attacks, was brought out of her place of terror and to a place of peace by a Yorkshire terrier named Scout.

With extraordinary access granted by The Port Authority of New York New Jersey, the program follows the five-year construction of 1 World Trade Center (1 WTC) and the National September 11 Memorial Museum, including interviews with 1 WTC architect David Childs; New York City Mayor Michael Bloomberg; Michael Arad, the man behind the breakthrough concept for the 9/11 memorial; and others.

Dr. Sanjay Gupta Reports: Terror in the Dust — CNN, Sept. 7, 11pm ET (replay Sept. 10, 9pm ET). This special examines how responders who breathed in the toxic dust and noxious fumes at New York’s Ground Zero are coping with the health effects of the attacks 10 years later. Dr. Gupta’s investigation includes never-before-broadcast footage of the collapse of the Twin Towers, the medical consequences of the killer dust and safety recommendations for future crisis responses.

PBS NewsHour PBS, Sept, 8, 6pm ET. Correspondent Tom Bearden examines aviation security, which has evolved from X-ray scanners for carry-on bags and metal detectors, to full-body scanners, being forced to remove one’s shoes, explosive trace detection and, most controversially, “enhanced pat-downs.” The report examines some of these cases and how three individuals have fallen afoul of the new security systems.

Beyond Bravery: The Women of 9/11 — CNN, Sept. 8, 11pm ET (replay Sept. 11, 9pm ET). Correspondent Soledad O’Brien profiles the sometimes-overlooked female rescue workers who raced to the Twin Towers in the wake of the attack, looking at their work over the decade following their life-altering experiences. Among the stories of these heroic women is an African-American firefighter whose company lost seven of the 342 firefighters who died that day. She is pushing to recruit more women to this dangerous job, even as the number of female firefighters has dropped to less than one percent of the NYFD. O’Brien also speaks with the family of a decorated police officer and mother who was photographed rescuing survivors just moments before the collapse of the towers, and reports on the present-day health and emotional struggles of these heroines.

Included are interviews with Matt Damon, Nancy O’Dell, Kyra Sedgwick, Jane Rosenthal, Wayne Brady, Cablevision CEO Jim Dolan and MTV co-founder John Sykes about where they were, how they were affected and what they have since done to help. The special reairs throughout the weekend.

Special Report: America Then and Now – HLN, Sept. 9, 5pm ET. An in-depth look at how Americans’ lives changed on 9/11, examining how we live our lives now versus then.

PBS NewsHour – PBS, Sept. 9, 6pm ET. Senior correspondent Margaret Warner reports from Egypt, the intellectual birthplace of al-Qaeda and the radical jihadi movement. Ten years after 9/11, how do Egyptians feel about the day and their role in it, and how do they feel about the United States?

McNally was on site at the World Trade Center when each of the towers fell, and worked exclusively at the site through the following November. McNally, whose 25th wedding anniversary was on Sept. 11, 2001, had planned a golf date with his wife, Liz, before he got the emergency call. “As Time Goes By” was the couple’s wedding song, so the 1942 classic Casablanca, which features the song prominently, is a natural as one of McNally’s picks tonight. It is followed by McNally’s second choice, Mister Roberts. McNally admires the film because its title character (played by Henry Fonda), is a leader “who always thinks about what he has to do for his men.”

Webb was at work in a nearby annex when the Pentagon was attacked. He and others served round-the-clock for the next several days investigating the crime scene. Webb, who became the first African American to hold the title of Criminal Investigator in Defensive Protective Service, chooses 1960′s All the Young Men as his first movie pick tonight, because it was one of the movies from his youth that inspired him to enter the military. And because he “grew up on John Wayne movies,” Webb also selects 1948′s Red River, with Wayne as a ruthless rancher and Montgomery Clift as a young protege who “turns out to be a better man” by learning the value of compassion.

Jeffrey Brown will speak with several contributors to a new book, Legacy Letters; all have written letters, filled with insights gained in the past 10 years, to the family members they lost when the Twin Towers collapsed in New York. Ray Suarez will explore the attitudes of American Muslims, their efforts to get beyond the deep mistrust caused by 9/11 and their perspectives on what the future looks like for them; the story will be shot in Murfreesboro, Tennessee. Judy Woodruff introduces viewers to a generation of young Americans who know only a post-9/11 world and visits a small town in California that has made extraordinary contributions, in terms of young lives lost, to the conflicts in Iraq and Afghanistan. Gwen Ifill will explore a decade of war’s impact on hundreds of thousands of soldiers and their families and the nation’s efforts to care for them. The broadcast will also include several pieces of a “video quilt” the PBS audience has been invited to help produce, using the PBS NewsHour’s social media sites.

Great Performances: “A Concert For New York” — PBS, Sept. 11, 9pm ET (check local listings). The New York Philharmonic, with conductor Alan Gilbert, soprano Dorothea Röschmann, mezzo-soprano Michelle DeYoung and the New York Choral Artists, performs Gustav Mahler’s Symphony No. 2, “Resurrection,” in a concert for remembrance and renewal on the anniversary of the Sept. 11, 2001, terror attacks.

Rebirth — Showtime, Sept. 11, 9pm ET/PT. The result of a decade-long filmmaking sojourn, the inspirational story of Rebirth follows the transformation of five people whose lives were forever altered on September 11, 2001 – and simultaneously tracks via unprecedented, multi-camera, time-lapse photography (accompanied by a great Philip Glass musical score) the minute-by-minute evolution of the memorial where the Twin Towers once rose over lower Manhattan.

According to producer/director Jim Whitaker, “Everything started with the site and putting the cameras up at the site. I just started essentially with the site, and I felt like I needed to approach it from kind of a 360‑degree angle and imagine who was affected at the site. So I had in my head an idea that I would find a firefighter, find somebody who was on the impact floor, various areas and people who would have been affected by the day in thinking about the site.”

In the film, we hear the gripping personal dramas of a fireman grappling with guilt after losing his best friend; a construction worker finding solace in new buildings rising from the wreckage; the fiancee of a first responder whose upended life takes surprising turns; a survivor who escaped from an impact floor but confronts life-changing scars; and a high-school student who uncovers new directions after the mother who meant everything to him perished.

The Space Between — USA Network, Sept. 11, 9pm ET/PT (replay at 10:53pm ET). Oscar winner Melissa Leo (The Fighter) could become an Emmy winner, too, with her strong performance in this film as Montine McLeod, a lonely flight attendant who ends up as an escort to 10-year-old Pakistani-American Omar Hassan (Anthony Keyvan, Lost, iCarly) who is traveling as an unaccompanied minor on Montine’s plane. The flight ends up grounded in Longview, Texas, on the infamous morning of Sept. 11, 2001. When Montine discovers that Omar’s father works in the World Trade Center, she is forced to find a way to get the boy back home to his uncertain future in New York. As they journey across America’s heartland in the hours and days immediately following the terrorist attacks, Montine and Omar help each other discover the importance of tolerance, redemption, acceptance and hope. It’s a quiet, straightforward film, with great performances throughout, that touches on the emotions still impacting us 10 years after 9/11 without getting schmaltzy.

USA is airing The Space Between as part of its Characters Unite public service campaign dedicated to combating prejudice, discrimination and intolerance while promoting understanding and acceptance. The movie made the rounds at some film festivals, winning the Grand Prize for Dramatic Feature at the Heartland Film Festival and garnering a Special Mention for Leo’s performance at the Tribeca Film Festival. AIRS COMMERCIAL-FREE.

It was already up to $8,000 Friday and if that figure holds up, it will set a new mark.

Larry Hicklen, a Civil War memorabilia store owner, said he had a “holy smokes!” moment when he saw the anonymously donated tintype. He says pictures of Lee are not rare, but that the tintype appears to have been made of a photograph that no longer exists. That’s because it shows the Virginian from the side, a rare angle.

Thinking of becoming your own boss if the recession claims your job?

You might want to think again — unless you want to be a private eye, open a day care or join one of a handful of other self-employment fields that managed to grow in a shrinking economy.

Middle Tennessee and the nation began shedding self-employed businesses for the first time during the economic recession, with few industries spared. Big losses were predictably linked to the housing market, including real estate agents and construction contractors.

But some self-employed fields saw growth, to the surprise of even those who made the numbers what they are.

Increases came in personal care services, including hair and nail salons, janitorial work and building maintenance, and repairs to household goods, according to numbers put out this summer by the U.S. Census Bureau.

Child day cares sprouted especially in Middle Tennessee, with the number increasing 12.2 percent from 2008 to 2009 in the area that includes Nashville, Franklin, Murfreesboro and Columbia. Nationally, day cares increased by 3.8 percent.

Self-employment in art, entertainment and recreation declined slightly nationwide but showed an uptick locally.

The Census Bureau reported that companies with no employees other than the owner make up the majority of businesses, but the nation lost 260,000 such firms in 2008, including more than 1,100 locally.

“People have a perception that self-employment becomes more robust in recessions,” said Don Bruce, an economics professor at the University of Tennessee Center for Business and Economic Research.

But retirement portfolio losses, decisions to work longer in traditional jobs and extensions to unemployment benefits might play a role in declining self-employment.

“There are as many reasons as there are people involved,” Bruce said.

Interviews with business owners in growing fields found that corporate layoffs, delayed retirements and longtime entrepreneurial dreams contributed to self-employment decisions.

Piano tuner

Donald Freeman never dreamed of running his own company, but 20 years of computer experience didn’t save his position during a 2009 downsizing at his former employer in Lynchburg, Va.

Relatives in Tennessee prompted Freeman to take up the old family business: tuning pianos.

“I like working for myself — it’s just that the business is not quite as vigorous,” he said.

At $85 per tuning — with as many as three in a day — he isn’t close to earning what he previously did, but “the potential is there,” he said. When he made the leap to self-employment, Freeman was surprised to learn that his father and brother had earned more tuning pianos than he did working with computers.

And as far as he can tell, the recession has caused only a few people to forgo tunings, he said.

Freeman’s work falls under the category of household goods repair, which has seen a small increase in self-employed firms locally and nationally.

Day-care owner

In its report, the Census Bureau highlighted the growing number of day cares from 2008 to 2009, including almost 250 new ones in the Nashville area.

The growth appears to be continuing, according to area residents in the industry.

Melinda Troutman, 42, of Mt. Juliet began the process to start her day care in late 2010 after a young relative was injured at another day-care center, she said.

A former hospital accountant, Troutman didn’t want to lose her income, but she was driven to provide care for her relative and other children, she said.

“We could take a small hit for a little while, but we would make that sacrifice,” she said.

She now cares for children ages 15 months to 5 years at her in-home day care within the city limits of Mt. Juliet. She hopes to expand in a few years with a larger facility elsewhere in Wilson County, which has more permissive zoning rules.

Troutman said her previous work prepared her for many of the rigors of running a business.

“We’re learning how to file taxes; that’s all new to us,” she said.

She’s also growing accustomed to a 60-hour work week.

“Once the kids are gone, it doesn’t stop,” she said. “You have to go disinfect the toys, do the paperwork. I knew it going in. I knew it was going to be a full-fledged job. But to me, it’s not really a job. It’s where my passion is.”

Filmmaker

The fields of arts, entertainment and recreation saw a nationwide decrease — but a local increase — in self-employment during the recession.

Writer and filmmaker Carolyn McDonald, 51, of Nashville called her self-employment effort a “leap of faith” after she was cut from a traditional day job in 2008.

“When you’re kind of forced to call upon the skills you’ve been using for other people … and use them for yourself, you’re like, ‘OK, I’m a one-man corporation,’ ” she said.

That means she does it all, from taking out the trash to maintaining her website, in addition to actually creating her works of art.

Right now, McDonald is working on a book about her life experiences and a documentary about a program that taught Nashville children about architecture and design.

Like more than half of all self-employed people, McDonald must also work part-time job to help pay the bills, she said.

But she recently attended a local workshop targeted at developing the business skills of artists.

She said her solo work is like performing a spinning-plates routine.

“I’ve made a commitment to make this my life,” she said.

Private investigator

James Hathcock of Donelson said he could not find a satisfying job to match his years of experience as a police officer, store security manager and bodyguard.

“They’re not hiring anybody who’s 60 for anything right now,” he said.

But private investigations utilize Hathcock’s management skills and street smarts.

“I don’t want to sit around and be depressed and get some piddly … little job,” he said. “It’s just really a good feeling to have your own business. … I’ve always worked for somebody else and had a paycheck.”

Because investigations and security services is a relatively small field, a Census Bureau researcher cautioned against reading too much into numbers that show a local increase in the field despite a slight national decrease.

However, many new to the field say the profession has obvious financial allure and makes sense to many aging and retired law enforcement officers. They also believe the industry is still growing.

The Tennessee Association of Licensed Private Investigators has noted a doubling of its membership since 2008, said association secretary Honey Hargrove. She also is new to the field, having previously worked in a family floral business.

Also semi-retired and new to the field is Ron Miller of Hendersonville, who said he found a niche in investigations in 2010. He works for defense attorneys, combing through records databases.

The job meets his interest in law and can be done from his cozy and cluttered home office, he said, adding that the work he does feels meaningful. It’s always “in-the-news stuff,” he said.

“‘I said pop music for cannibals for a while,’ recalls the If You Wannas’ Ryan Cox. ‘Then I called it minimalist pop mayhem. I also said green apples in mud to someone once.’ Surprisingly, these off-the-wall descriptions are somehow fitting of the If You Wannas dreamy soundscapes, poppy hooks and often-bizarre lyrics. Built around Cox’s gleefully melancholy vocals and guitarist Gavin Conner’s meandering riffs, the band’s catalog is an experiment in stylistic schizophrenia. Drawing from elements of ska, roots rock, grunge and indie pop, listening to an If You Wannas album is like playing a carefully constructed mix tape, cohesive yet capable of dramatic stylistic leaps from one track to the next.”

Plans for the celebration include good food, great music, activities for families and a chance to renew our common ground in the prinicples and positive vision that the Transition Movement offers. We are inviting some politicians, some of the many nonprofits already doing this work in WNC, some of the green businesses that have generously supported sustainability efforts in our community and, most important, all of the many folks who have attended our events, read our newsletter and believe that together we can make a future beyond fossil fuels.” The afternoon will include entertainment by Billy Jonas, Geri Littlejohn, Deja Fuze and more. 5-10 p.m. Free.

• Halloween is still a few months away, but that doesn’t mean it’s too early to get spooked. Join a Blue Ridge Parkway Ranger for a two-mile hike to Moses and Bertha Cone’s final resting place, which is rumored to be haunted. Trip departs from Moses H. Cone Memorial Park, MP 294. 8 p.m. Free.

• From this week’s Xpress:

“Sure, Asheville has its share of bands of brothers (The Enemy Lovers, Her Marigold, Sons of Ralph, to name a few). But very rarely do three brothers — in three different bands — grace the same stage on the same night with each of their musical ventures. Meet the Robbins brothers. You’ve probably heard of Wayne Robbins, the oldest. With a Neil Young-meets-My Bloody Valentine sound, his band Wayne Robbins The Hellsayers has released two critically acclaimed albums and tromped through Europe opening for Band of Horses. Younger brother Sean Robbins, 37, also a guitarist and songwriter, cut his teeth in local buzz band Nevada before forming the sunny-pop tinged Warm the Bell last year. And 31-year-old Matt Robbins, the youngest, currently plays drums in the tripped-out, Raleigh shoegaze band White Cascade.”

The brothers perform at The LAB (39 North Lexington Avenue, 252-0212). 10 p.m. $5.

MURFREESBORO — Glowgolf, an operator of indoor, glow-in-the-dark, miniature golf courses based in Wichita, Kan., has opened a new location at Stones River Mall.

Glow-in-the-dark miniature golf is a family entertainment concept similar to black light or “cosmic” bowling. Special florescent golf balls, putters, course obstacles and wall décor all glow under black lights. The florescent glow of the course creates a “one-of-a-kind” miniature golf experience.

Located next to Sears, the new Stones River Mall Glowgolf features an 18-hole golf course, a Laser Maze Challenge attraction and an area for birthday parties and group events. Guests can play up to three rounds of golf with their admission. An adult admission is $8 and a child admission is $6. Group and family discounts are also available. Operating hours are Monday through Saturday 10 a.m. to 9 p.m. and Sunday 12 p.m. to 6 p.m.

Brea Faeth, area manager for Glowgolf, said, “This is a wonderful opportunity for us. The golf course here has all of our latest bells and whistles. It’s a lot of fun to play. The shoppers at Stones River Mall are really going to enjoy it.”

In addition to the new Stones River Mall location, Glowgolf operates miniature golf courses across the United States. A complete list of locations is available at www.opryglowgolf.com.

MURFREESBORO — Kelsey Stroop’s ties to Hollywood have come a long way since she first sold concessions at Premier 6 Theater.

A 2006 graduate of Oakland High, Stroop has spent the better part of the last year working on the motion picture “Dolphin Tale.” The movie — starring heavyweights Morgan Freeman, Ashley Judd and Harry Connick Jr. — details the relationship of a rescued dolphin named Winter and the impact she has on the lives of the staff at Clearwater Marine Hospital in Florida and their family members.

She was in town Friday to talk about her experiences with Oakland theater students. Stroop served as the assistant to director Charles Martin Smith, likely best-known for his role as Agent Oscar Wallace in “The Untouchables.”

“I did everything an assistant does, getting his groceries and dry cleaning, helping him read scripts and arranging travel. I can’t even think of all the things I’ve done,” Stroop said.

Stroop graduated from the University of Tampa in May 2010 and said she never expected to be working on a major motion picture so soon. It was a college professor, she said, who recommended her for a job at the production company. A secretary in the office thought Stroop would work well with Smith and arranged an interview.

“We talked for about five minutes and (Smith) said, ‘I think this will work,’” she recalled.

The movie premiers in Hollywood Sept. 17 and opens nationwide Sept. 23.

“It was a good way for the students to see what you can do (studying theater) and how it comes together,” said April Gunter, who teaches theater and speech at the school. “She really impressed her professors in Tampa. Keeping in touch with them, especially the ones you work closely with, is important as you start looking for work.”

Not all aspects of filmmaking are as glamorous as they may appear, Stroop said, especially jobs that require working behind the scenes.

“If you want normal, this isn’t the life for you. I’ve worked 16 and 18 hour days, but the more you’re willing to do, the more responsibility you’ll get,” she said, adding that students should take advantage of any opportunities to work on commercials or other small projects while in college.

His name was Jesse, but he went by Scarab or Drake. He was 24, stood five-feet, nine-inches tall, and had reddish-brown shoulder-length hair. He’d driven to the 12th annual Gathering of the Juggalos this year with his girlfriend, a young woman nicknamed Scratch, who’d been handcrafting boxes with Insane Clown Posse’s Joker’s Card figures to sell at the festival for five bucks a piece. And then on Friday, he vanished.

On Sunday evening, a barricade fence inexplicably went up by the Gathering’s Main Stage, in a stage-left area adjacent to the Ohio River.

“Scarab was a writer, a smart outdoor enthusiast, and a caring soul,” writes friend Hao Ly, who’d just recently become close with Waters. “He told me he had plans to attend the Gathering of the Juggalos because he wanted to accompany his girlfriend and made sure nothing would happen to her. He’s been with her for eight years and loved her very much.”

The weekend before the Gathering of the Juggalos, Waters volunteered at the proudly off-the-grid Unitus Arts Entertainment Festival in Gruetli-Laager, Tennessee, a camping event of drum circles, eco-friendly workshops, and the Southeast’s largest fire-poi competition. This is where Ly met him. “He had such an amazing personality and was so ambitious that he helped us out more than the required eight hours,” the Unitus founder says about working with Waters. “He took care of everyone during the festival including, finding mint leaves outdoor to help aid sore throats, to cooking for the staff and covering their nightshifts.” Ly adds, “He even stayed after the event and was one of the couple to help clean up after everyone has left.”

On Saturday, Waters’s friends were scouring the HogRock campgrounds, showing a picture around and asking if anyone had seen him. Union County, Kentucky coroner Stephen Shouse doesn’t suspect foul play, reports no signs of trauma, and when we spoke with him this morning, confirmed that the autopsy was “unremarkable, pending toxicology results,” which will be available in approximately 30 days.

“He asked me and my buddy the best way to get down to the river,” posted Gathering attendee Kyle Willard on Facebook. “We told him not to get in it, as it is a powerful river with an undercurrent. I guess he didn’t listen to us.”

Waters did have a Gathering of the Juggalos wristband on when he was found, but that’s a mandatory bracelet for admission. “He was in no sort a Juggalo from what I collected,” says Ly. “I know he would not be happy being labeled by the media as a [Juggalo] and I hope that this could be changed.”

Regardless, Juggalos have been posting tributes online. “Everyone please say prayers (or whatever your belief might be) for the family of [Jesse] Waters,” wrote Mr. Hatchet of the Web site True Juggalo Family. “We lost a homie at the Gathering this year,” posted RuthlessNinjette. “May you rest in peace brother til we see you in Shangri-La! MCL!!” Monoxide from
Saturday night’s headliner Twiztid, Tweeted, “A moment of silence for the fallen juggalo, Jesse Waters RIP.”

This isn’t the first time someone has died near the Gathering of the Juggalos grounds since it’s been held at Cave-In-Rock. Last year, Hardin County then-Sheriff Thomas Seiner told us that another young man was found dead in the Cave-In-Rock woods at a previous Illinois-based Gathering, a young Juggalo who’d wandered off alone and died from dehydration. The biggest difference between this one and that one is that the national media didn’t notice.

MURFREESBORO, — With two new fashion retailers set to open for the holidays and new expanded entertainment options coming soon, Stones River Mall is adding to its shopper-friendly reputation as hub for not only shopping, but also dining and entertainment.

At the top of the list of fashionable additions is teen favorite Wet Seal. The California-based company is a leading specialty retailer of contemporary apparel for teen girls and young adults, featuring on-trend collections of fashion tops, dresses, shoes, denim, accessories and more at affordable prices. Wet Seal is planning to open in time for holiday dressing and gifting. The 3,900 square-foot store will be located near the Food Court.

Also slated to open during the holidays is Versona Accessories, a new women’s specialty retailer of jewelry and accessories, accented by key apparel items. The retailer boasts an upscale shopping environment where women can find all the necessities to complete an outfit, including jewelry, handbags, belts, scarves, hair accessories, sunglasses, footwear and more. Versona will occupy 8,842 square feet outdoors in lifestyle promenade, The Shops at Stones River, and will be among the first 10 new stores nationwide.

Visitors to Stones River Mall will score some wholesome fun when Glowgolf opens this Friday. The glow-in-the-dark mini golf offers rounds of fun and inexpensive entertainment for all ages. Excellent for groups, small parties or just a twosome, players enjoy a round of miniature golf under a blacklight — even the balls glow. Glowgolf will be located near Sears and the Food Court.

In other entertainment news, longtime favorite at Stones River Mall, Chuck E. Cheese’s is expanding its current location at the main entrance to the shopping center beginning late August, adding 2,100 square feet of entertainment space.

When completed, the popular party place will offer even more of its wholesome environment with games, food and fun for kids of all ages. Chuck E. Cheese’s plans to remain open during construction.

As a result of the Chuck E. Cheese’s expansion, GNC, one of the world’s largest stores dedicated to helping customers improve the quality of their lives, has made a move and is now located inside Stones River Mall off Center Court next to Best Buy Mobile.
