A True Story: A few years ago, I made the switch to using natural toothpastes because I wanted to eliminate the use of fluoride from my daily hygiene regiment. Unfortunately, fluoride free toothpaste was hard to find at stores and I was forced to shop around on the internet. I tried many different natural brands, but never settled on anything. Eventually, I learned of a Dentist (Dr. Nate Schott D.D.S.) who had formulated his own natural toothpaste right here in Murfreesboro and was told several locations I could buy it locally. So naturally, I went to Reeves Sain drugstore a few days later and bought a tube of Dr. Nate’s Natural Toothpaste. (Scroll down towards bottom for a list of Middle Tennessee retailers).

The first time I brushed my teeth with Dr. Nate’s Toothpaste, I was extremely surprised how much I liked it! I had tried many natural toothpastes before and enjoyed them somewhat, but they never really tasted like toothpaste to me. It was more like a substitute gel. But with Dr. Nate’s Toothpaste, it tasted very similar to commercial toothpaste. I actually thought it tasted better! It seemed like someone had finally found a natural formula that would be easy to adopt, for those who are looking to avoid fluoride and other toxins, but like the taste of commercial paste.

The other thing I really liked about Dr. Nate’s Natural Toothpaste is that is wasn’t quite as thick and foamy as regular toothpaste. It had a much smoother consistency than commercial toothpastes I had been using most of my life. I have always felt that store brand toothpastes create too much dry foam that made my gag reflexes uncomfortable! I don’t get that sensation with Dr. Nate’s Toothpaste. The consistency is just right and the taste is absolutely great. I found my brand!

Simply put, the formula is the best that I have ever used, and after a three year journey to find the best tasting natural toothpaste on the internet, who would have thought that I would stumble upon it right in my own backyard? I eventually got a chance to meet Dr. Schott and he seemed to be a true gentleman with a great heart. I was so impressed with him, his dental practice, and his toothpaste that we gave him a free banner at the top of our website! Dr. Schott didn’t pay us a dime. So what’s the big deal about Fluoride and Commercial Toothpaste?

In recent years, there has been much concern about the toxicity of fluoride and other ingredients that are in your run of the mill toothpaste at the grocery store. Because of this debate, millions of people are switching to toothpaste that uses natural ingredients (such as Xylitol rather than Fluoride) in order to fight cavities. Why take the risk if there are more effective and safer solutions out there?

Commercial toothpastes often use saccharin for sweetening, which is believed to cause cancer. It also contains fluoride, though widely considered an effective cavity fighter, it can be toxic in small doses. Because of the sweet taste of toothpaste, Children often like to experiment with swallowing it, which can be hazardous. Avoiding fluoride in your toothpaste helps ensure that you or your children won’t reach toxic exposure, which can cause gray mottling on your teeth, brittle teeth, and other health problems.

Naturally made toothpaste is also better because it contains more mint oil than commercial toothpaste. Mint oil is the best ingredient for killing the bacteria in your mouth. Killing these bacteria is extremely important, because the bacteria are what cause gingivitis and bad breath. The other host of ingredients in commercial toothpastes don’t even help with the most important task: killing those bacteria that are living in your mouth!

Many people buy commercial toothpaste simply because it’s what they’ve always done and because it’s readily available. Most people who make the switch to natural toothpaste report a fresher feeling mouth and better checkups from their dentist. And although it can be a couple dollars more than standard toothpaste, isn’t it worth spending an extra $10 dollars a year to properly take care of your mouth? You will save more than that on your dental bills when you keep your mouth healthy. Prevention is the key to having a healthy mouth!
