Olympus Gym has the best deal in town if you want to get in shape! For only $15 a month you get to work out at the best gym in town, with the most Free options! You won’t believe all of the perks included with your membership! When I joined, I simply paid $210 for the whole year, and that was it! That’s just the setup fee at most gyms, and then they want to charge you $50 a month after that? Heck no!

Olympus gym really surprised me when I found out that they have free child care and free tanning beds! These are services that most gyms charge extra for (or charge too much for a membership). They also have free exercise groups and offer you a few free personal training sessions to get you started.

Olympus has everything you could want when it comes to working out. The variety and abundance of equipment is very impressive to say the least. Personally, I prefer a co-ed environment and it seems to work very well. They have a great layout of several different sections, for different genres of working out, including a padded Group Exercise room, indoor track, freeweight room, a large machine & treadmill room, and a Mixed Martial Arts Gym!

The thing I really noticed was that everyone that works there is extremely nice and helpful. They seem to work hard at keeping the place clean and organized. That’s a huge plus!

So what’s the catch? Well, you’d think a gym this big and versitile would try to make some extra money by selling highly marked up beverage, protien and food items, since the monthly fee is so low. Surely they don’t let you get off that easy? Well yes they do! I was very suprised on how inexpensive their Refreshment Bar prices were. In fact, I can get a Red Bull for cheaper than my grocery store! Water is only a buck per bottle and Gatorade is only a $1.25.

In addition, the owner is a really nice guy and is actually probably in the best shape out of anyone in there. That really conveys a message to me that he’s serious and passionate about what he does, and how he runs his gym. I really respect that in a business man. Be the best at what you do and take it seriously. That’s what Olympus Gym does!

In my opinion as a business man, these guys are doing everything right and they should be commended on a job well done. The Southeast Gym that was located in the same spot before Olympus, was the worst gym I have ever been to. Now since Olympus has taken over the scene, it is hands down, the best gym I have ever been to, and I’ve been to a lot of them in the last 15 years! Olympus has taken a tainted location and turned it into a proud symbol of Murfreesboro business. The formula is simple… offer your customers a deal they can’t refuse, and that’s exactly what the guys at Olympus gym have done! Thank you for making fitness affordable again!

Chicken Soup for the Soul is a series of books, usually featuring a collection of short and dense inspirational stories and motivational essays. The 101 stories in the first book of the series were compiled by motivational speakers Jack Canfield and Mark Victor Hansen. Time magazine called this book series “the publishing phenomenon of the decade”

There have been over 200 titles. Many of the books are directed at specific groups of people, e.g. Chicken Soup for the Mother’s Soul, Chicken Soup for the Preteen Soul, Chicken Soup for the Prisoner’s Soul, Chicken Soup for the Soul: Tough Times, Tough People, Chicken Soup for the Grandparent’s Soul, Chicken Soup for the Soul: Teens Talk Relationships, Chicken Soup for the Soul: Thanks Dad, etc.

The first book sold millions of copies and launched the series. There are now over 140 million copies sold and in print in 54 languages worldwide. The Chicken Soup for the Teenage Soul series, consisting of over 14 titles, is one of the first series of non-fiction books which have sold directly to teens in the US, Canada, the UK and Australia.

The series has spawned a number of imitators and parodies including Chicken Soup for the Vegetarian’s Soul and MTV’s Beavis and Butt-Head: Chicken Soup for the Butt, as well as a line of licensed products, including greeting cards, calendars, gift products pet food, clothing, DVDs, and Bibles. A parody can also be found within the PC game A Vampyre Story; a book titled Chicken Soup For Those Without A Soul can be found in the library.

The name “Chicken Soup For The Soul” was chosen for this series because of the use of chicken soup as a home remedy for the sick, and therefore it was “good for the body.” The inspirational stories included in this series were meant to be “good for the soul.

Every year, The Ruthies Awards hold county wide elections for the community’s “Favorite” companies and professionals, from all around Middle Tennessee. However, for a few coveted award categories, The 2010 Ruthies have designated the definitive prefix of “Best”, rather than the usual notion of “Favorite”. Hundreds of lookers-on gathered at 1:30 P.M. for the pledge of allegiance, followed by “The Star Spangled Banner,” sung by students from Oakland High School.

At the nearby cemetery, a small flag at the headstone of each grave provided the backdrop as Ben Leming, who only ten days ago was in Iraq on combat helicopter duty, remembered three recently fallen heroes.

A three-hundred-plus name roll call was read to honor veterans have fallen since last May.  Several of them recently were lost in Iraq and Afghanistan.

A flowered wreath of red, white, and blue was placed on the edge of the cemetery.

The program, including a twenty-one-gun salute by 9th Kentucky Regiment followed by “Taps” played by Technical Sergeant Gilbert Laforest, Vietnam veteran.  Said the horn player, such ceremonies “show our youth,” and keep veterans’ memories alive.  They make him “feel honored to be in the armed forces and know that people do care for what [he’s] done.”

The program ended with the retirement of the colors, after which hot dogs and lemonade were served.

Local scout troops placed the headstone flags.

Smyrna’s Malco Roxy Theater will be hosting a Kids Summer Film Fest starting June 1 and ending July 28.

At 10:00 AM on Tuesdays and Wednesdays, the tape will roll for modern and classic films for kids, and for parents, the best part is the ticket price: $2.

Some of the proceeds of the Kids Summer Film Fest will go to children’s hospitals across the Mid-south.

The Kids Summer Film Fest is open to all residents of Smyrna, Murfreesboro, and everywhere else.

The benefit concert, which also will be a night of praise, will feature The Well’s praise team as well as special guest Jamie Harvill.

The concert will raise money and materials to benefit for flood victims.  Donations of non-perishable food and bottled water will be collected, and a “love offering” (meaning essentially that the church will pass the Proverbial plate) will be collected for charity Feed America First, a Middle Tennessee nonprofit dedicated to help relieve hunger in rural Tennessee, Mississippi, and Alabama.  Each dollar donated could provide enough food for twelve to fifteen meals.

Central Middle School is located at 701 East Main Street.  Logan’s Roadhouse will sell food starting at 5:15, with proceeds going to Feed America First, and the concert will start at 6:30.

Organized in 1939 as a municipal, customer-owned utility, Murfreesboro Electric Department is one of 159 members and distributors of power from the Tennessee Valley Authority.

In 1968, William Burton began practicing law.  Still providing free initial consultations, his practice has grown to include a litany of services, including business and injury litigation, wrongful death, brain and spinal cord injury, and other civil and criminal cases.

According to County Engineer Dale Corbitt, the water pooled in the area because of its elevation.  Due to the geography of the Shores Road area, there is no lower ground for the water to drain off to.  Only recently have Middle Tennessee Electric and other utilities and government departments started pumping water from the area towards I-840.

Already costing $30,000 for just the pumps and hosing, and with the job only about one-sixth to one-fifth complete, FEMA likely will foot a large part of the bill.

There is no news yet on when the area’s cleanup is expected to be complete.

Held at Middle Tennessee State University’s campus, the 2010 Kermit Davis Basketball Camps will offer 8–10 regulation games, camp and staff apparel, team film sessions in the newly-renovated Blue Raider locker rooms, and will make use of the MTSU campus’ 10 regulation basketball courts.

Team camps will be held June 9–11 and 16–18, and individual camp dates will be June 28–July 1.  Team camp costs are $100 to register (including one head coach and assistant), $170 per player, and $100 per extra non-player.  Commuters can register for $50 and pay only $60 per player.

Washington, DC Tea Party

During the 2007-2008 presidential primary season, the Libertarian Party went through a little schism.  Two factions of the party vied for control: the Purists (as I’ll call them), who wanted to nominate a candidate who was an outspoken, “The Law” thumping, Jefferson-quoting — even if he was foaming at the mouth — Libertarian; and the Pragmatists (as I’ll call them), who wanted to nominate someone with real political chops, preferably who had been elected to something before, even if he wasn’t 100%, because it gave the LP street cred.

With the nomination of (former Republican U.S. Representative) Bob Barr, the Pragmatists had won.  The Purists, however, being Purists, weren’t satisfied with this and started their own political party: The Boston Tea Party USA.

After Obama’s election, what with the whole bailout debacle and all, as the story goes, the state Libertarian Party of Illinois decided to play make-nice with the Boston Tea Party USA folks, so they decided to state a Boston tea party-style protest on the shore of Lake Michigan.  The idea was (essentially) to suck up to the Boston Tea Party USA folks and bring them back into the fold.

That was the tea party that CNBC contributor Rick Santelli referenced in his now-famous rant live on television from The CME Group in Chicago ( www.snipurl.com/rantoftheyear ), and that was what got the contemporary Tea Party movement off the ground.

Following Santelli’s call-to-arms, local Tea Party groups sprang up all over the country, some having rallies in February, almost all of them having events on the day of that year’s income tax filing deadline.

Here in Murfreesboro, a small group of four Rutherford County locals, led by then-chairman of the local Republican Party Lou Ann Zelenik, put together an event hoping for at least 300 attendees.  Over 3,000 people showed up for the largest political rally in Murfreesboro history.

The rest, as they say, is history.

Founded in 1911 as a state normal school for training educators, Middle Tennessee State University now is the largest educator in Tennessee, weighing in at over 25,000 enrollees annually.

There had been some speculation that the Challenge, which runs through downtown Murfreesboro, would be leaving the county, but according to General Mills, that will not be the case.

This year’s race will benefit the Boys & Girls Clubs of Rutherford County, the Governor’s Books from Birth Foundation, and CASA, the Court Appointed Special Advocates for children.

The Boys & Girls Clubs of Rutherford County offer supervised recreation and personal development for children during out-of-school hours, promoting competence, usefulness, and a sense of belonging.

The Governor’s Books from Birth Foundation assists Tennessee preschool children in developing skills related to language in general, reading specifically, and schoool, by monthly mailings of age-appropriate books to children’s homes from birth to age five.

CASA, Court Appointed Special Advocates, is a program that recruits volunteers who are then appointed by a judge to be social workers for children, usually only one at a time, to make sure that they are placed in safe, permanent homes.

Murfreesboro's Discovery Center at Murfree Creek

Murfreesboro’s The Discovery Center at Murfree Spring will be hosting two events for children early this coming week.

At 9 AM on Monday, The Discovery Center will host Parents & Tots: Animals on the Farm, an event for children five years and younger.  Created by the National Wildlife Foundation, this event is part of the Parents & Tots program, which teaches reading, math, and science and health through play and interaction.  Included in the price of admission, attendees also will enjoy snacks, crafts, and parenting support.

On Tuesday, May 18, at 3:30 PM, attendees of all ages will Animal Antics.  Included in the price of admission to The Discovery Center and created by The National Wildlife Foundation, participants will have the opportunity to learn about animals of all sorts and their environments.

The Discovery Center at Murfree Spring is an educational center featuring an hands-on museum and nature exhibits, aimed at inspiring children and families through creative fun.  The Discovery Center was started in 1986 as Children’s Museum Corporation of Rutherford County, and The Discovery Center doors opened after a young parents’ grassroots campaign.  Twenty-four years later, over 110,000 people visit the Center every year.
