Alabama’s Steven Troy Hampel was convicted in 2009 for using a wooden cane and his own fists to beat 54-year-old Terry Tank.  Testifying in court, Tank said he thought while he was being beaten that he would die.

Following his conviction, Hampel was released from custody and allowed to go free until his sentencing hearing.  That turned out to be a bad idea; Hampel fled and did not appear for the hearing.

Murfreesboro Police arrested the 34-year-old Alabama man on Windmere Drive this week, and it is quite possible now that he ever again will be free; his three prior convictions make him eligible for life in prison.
