Murfreesboro Budget Brings Challenges, No Assistant Yet for City Manager
Murfreesboro City Manager Bob Lyons has no assistant.
The city is trying to find him one, but before that can happen, there is the small issue of deciding what to pay the person who gets the job.
The coming year’s budget already is looking tight. With a property tax which will have been stagnant for twelve years in sight, ten full-time positions are likely to be on the chopping block.
This makes it difficult to justify a pay increase for the City Managerial Assistant position.
On June 10, the City Council will hold a public meeting at City Hall, where the budget of Murfreesboro’s 771-person staff and their departments will be discussed.
Currently, the City Mayor earns $12,000 annually, and the six City Council members earn $11,400 annually.
City leaders are considering waiting until after Christmas to see if sales tax revenues can justify pay increases city-wide, before hiking any single position’s pay.
