MTSU Vintage Book Exhibit Shows off Odd, Anachronistic Books
Lovers of vintage books, rejoice; Middle Tennessee State University is playing host to “Books and Children in the 19th Century: a Small Portrait.”
The exhibit of 1800s-era children’s books is located in Special Collections on the fourth floor of the MTSU library and is open to the public.
While today’s media focuses primarily on entertainment, the purpose of this exhibit is to show how in Victorian America, morals, character building, and community values were the central theme of the books, and entertainment value was used primarily as a tool to maintain the reader’s interest through the whole lesson.
A special feature of the exhibit are so-called “movable books,” which feature reader-manipulatable text and pictures and include pop-up books. These special pieces date back to at least 1860.
Also, much of the exhibit is being shown for the first time, and those who visit the exhibit are certain to notice certain features of these books which one would be hard-pressed to find in a modern children’s book, such as having been published by a cereal manufacturer in order to act as an advertising platform for their product.
If you would like to see the exhibit for yourself, visit the James Walker Library on the campus of Middle Tennessee State University Monday–Friday between 8 A.M. and 4:30 P.M..
