Fabulous Five: Summer Beauty Survival (Murfreesboro)

I wrote an article back in January on tips and tricks to combat winter beauty blues, and now that temperatures are finally touching 80, it’s about time to trot out a list of the best beauty products to get you through the summer without wilting, greasing, or fading.

Summer does a number on the beauty routine, there’s no doubt. Hair colour fades faster, foundation slides off, and eye shadow disappears, promising to call you ‘sometime this week, babe.’ No more! With these five fabulous beauty products, everyone will wonder what your secret is. (You can either act all smug and effortless, or send them here and act all smug and cutting-edge.)

1. Oil Control Lotion

A must-have for all but the dry types, an oil control lotion is exactly what the name implies.  It nourishes and softens the skin while controlling sebum (a fancy term for oil).

Primers are wonderful, and I love them dearly, but when the mercury tops off they can feel a tad too heavy on the skin, which is why I chose oil control lotions instead.  Smooth it on as your regular moisturizer and you’re good to go!

Recommended Products : Estee Lauder Clear Difference, Bobbi Brown Oil Control Lotion SPF 15 (pictured)

2. Eye Shadow Primer

I’ve said it before — written an entire article on it, in fact — but an eye shadow primer is a woman’s best accessory.  It throws up a force field around your makeup and keeps shadows and liners from going anywhere.  Put some along your lower lashes as well to keep mascara from touching skin’s oils & rubbing off under the eyes.  Most women struggle with creases and fading year-round, but summertime amplifies an already ongoing battle.

Recommended Products : Urban Decay Primer Potion in Sin (makeup and primer in one!), Mary Kay Eye Primer (both pictured).

3. Lip Stain

Lip stains deposit a wash of juicy colour, then dry down to a matte finish.  And they staunchly refuse to go anywhere.  Lipstick melts in the heat, let’s face it.  Gloss?  Don’t even think about it.  It’ll slide before you can bat your eyelashes (let alone transfer it to someone else, ooh-la-la).  Draw on your colour, let it set, and top it with a non-oily balm and you’re good to go.  Want more intense colour?  Apply a second coat, like nail polish.  Or a third.  Then your balm.  Voilà.

Recommended Products : Tarte Natural Lip Stain, Vincent Longo Stain (both pictured).

4. UV Hair Protection

If you have ever coloured your hair, put in highlights, or like your hair just the way it is thank-you-very-much, you need a UV protective spray for your bouncy tresses.  Hair colour fades so much faster in summer, you don’t even want to know.  The hair gods do not care whether that fading colour was bottled or home-grown, either.  Protect your investment, or your god-given gifts, and invest in a UV spray.

Recommended Products : Aveda Sun Care, Redken Color Extend Sun (both pictured).

5. Spray Sunscreen

Yeah, I know, sunscreen’s no fun.  It’s sticky, it smells funny, and it’s a pain to slather on.  That’s why I love spray-on sunscreens.  They’re so much easier to apply, and you can cover every inch unassisted!  (If you’re trying to get the attention of that dreamy lifeguard, you may want to carry a decoy tube of the regular stuff as well.  I’m just sayin’.)  SPF 30 is the bare minimum recommended by dermatologists today.  If you’re married to the idea of tanning, sunscreen will still allow you to get colour, and hopefully prevent further age spots in the future.

Recommended Products : Neutrogena Dry-Touch, LaRoche Posay Anthelios.

What are your must-have summer survival beauty products?  Is there anything you would recommend that I missed?
