Who is the "Real" winner of the latest GOP straw poll?

Despite the fact that Ron Paul came in second to liberal Mitt Romney (by one vote), Ron Paul is still the “real” winner of the latest GOP straw poll at the Southern Republican Leadership Conference.

Since his presidential campaign ended in 2008, Ron Paul has built a political movement, and because of the work of Dr. Paul, the conservatives in this country have awakened from their dark slumber.  The liberal, interventionist dogma of Mitt Romney and like-minded Republicans is on its way out the door.

Because of Paul, Tea Parties and tax revolts have spread across the nation.  Young people are waking up and shaking off the chains of apathy.  The constitution has become the new center of American politics–something it has not been for quite awhile.

Mitt Romney, who didn’t even bother to show up at the conference, has done nothing of the sort.  Romney is a liberal Republican whose health care “reform” policies as governor of Massachusetts have set the model for Obama’s unconstitutional takeover of the health insurance industry.

Further, Romney’s views on foreign policy are enough to make real conservatives shiver.  Romney wants to continue and even expand America’s empire.  At a time when America already has over 130 military bases in over seventy countries worldwide, Romney as commando-in-chief would be more devastating to the constitution and civil liberties than Obama or Bush ever could be.  Romney would be a nightmare for conservatives and, more importantly, the nation as a whole.  These liberal, expansionist views really mean only one thing: government expansion, something ardent conservatives must be opposed to in order to actually call themselves “conservatives.”

The political victories we conservatives will see in the coming future will be because of the courage of Ron Paul, who stood up to the liberals like Mitt Romney in the 2008 Republican primary.  Ron Paul single-handedly had the courage to stand on a stage surrounded by establishment Republican liberals and explain why he voted against a war that most Americans now agree was stupid.

Ron Paul was the man who had the courage to talk about the disastrous monetary policy of the Federal Reserve, something that just isn’t done in political campaigns.  Because Ron Paul set out to educate the masses about real conservative values of a constitutional, limited government and individual freedom–the conservative movement, the New Old Right–has spread like wildfire.

Unlike Ron Paul, Mitt Romney cannot claim to have helped reinvigorate the conservatives in this country, mainly because he is not a conservative.  Romney is a politician who would spread government however, wherever, and whenever he sees fit.  He cares nothing about the constitution or the values or messages left to us by the Founding Fathers.  Ron Paul is a man who has stood before session after session of congress defending the constitution and the values of the Founders.

The probable Republican defeat of the Democrats in 2010 and Obama in 2012 can really be traced back to one man: Ron Paul.  All of Dr. Paul’s hard work has led to this point.  His reverence for the constitution and limited government is the reason the GOP will soon have ground to stand on.
