Strengthening Tennessee’s State Sovereignty (Rutherford)
Senate Bill 3498, introduced recently by State Senator Mae Beavers, was adopted by the State Senate. One of the reasons for introducing this bill is to amend certain Tennessee statutes relative to health care. But, the principal reason for proposing this amendment is to prevent the federal government from misusing the new federal Health Care Act by interfering with the constitutional right of every person within the State of Tennessee to be free to choose or decline to choose any mode of securing health care services without penalty or threat of penalty from any public official or from even the federal government. Her bill is known as the “Tennessee Health Freedom Act.”
Many Tennessee legislators appear ready to stand up against any effort by the federal government to deny Tennessee the right to be exempted from the new federal health care act. These legislators, including Senator Bill Ketron and Rep. Joe Carr, support the citizens in our fight to maintain Tennessee’s State’s Rights as guaranteed to our States by the 10th amendment to the Constitution.
Senator Beavers’ proposed legislation is not the only example of how the State Legislature has adopted a fighting mood; but, also HB 3433, introduced by State Representative Mike Bell, has made very significant progress in its move toward final approval by the State House of Representatives. Rep. Bell’s House Bill is identical to Sen. Beavers’ Senate Bill, and therefore it also is entitled the “Tennessee Health Freedom Act.” In order to protect and preserve the rights and property of the residents of Tennessee, Rep. Bell’s proposed bill calls for quick and appropriate action against anyone, including the federal government, who may violate any part of the Tennessee Health Freedom Act.
In addition to the State’s Rights issue that the federal Health Care Act presents, Tennessee legislators are also deeply concerned about the multiple millions of dollars that the federal Health Care Act will cause to be exacted from our State. We here in Rutherford County should be very concerned, because the out of control deficit spending by our county will make paying our fair share of the federal health care costs a greater burden considering the $565,000,000 debt, including interest, which as a county, we owe. I see tax upon tax in our future….county…..state….and national.
So, it is good to see that our State legislators are taking action to prevent the federal Health Care Act from further bleeding the pocketbooks of the citizens of Tennessee. We would appreciate you, the County Commissioners, doing your part also.
