Rock the Trend: Athletic (Murfreesboro Fashion)
I was never one of those sporty girls. In gym class when we ran a mile around the track, I cut across the middle of the football field and still came in toward the end. (My point of pride is not getting caught.) But thanks to this season’s athletic trend I can pretend that sprints are my thing and pushups are my anti-drug.
Alexander Wang, of course, comes to mind first. (Do side braids ring a bell?)
His collection conjured up 1940s football gear. This means sweatshirt material and butterscotch leather trim. There are a lot of trousers with a faux sweatpant waistband at the waist. Loafers, too, make an appearance. You’re on your own with the gray hotpants curiously reminiscent of manderwear.
Here is an outfit I put together as an example of one way to do Wang :
Here we have a drape-y heathered gray tank under a brown leather bomber with slim black Capri sweats. This might be a cute weekend getup. For shoes you could do a little flat moccasin or simple sandal. I may even be so bold as to suggest slapping on some heels for a casual night-time soiree. (Just don’t lose the jacket, because that’s what keeps everything from looking gym-o-riffic.) The key is to keep everything slim and trim, as it prevents the outfit from getting sloppy. Size does matter.
And here’s a shot from Elie Tahari:
Gucci and Proenza Schouler hopped on the athletic track (get it, get it?!) and took it to the water, drawing on elements from wetsuits and divers gear.

I actually tried on an amazing dress from Forever 21 that incorporates some of the colours and shaping seen on their runway :
And I desperately want this swimsuit. Leave it to me to crave a $500 strip of fabric :
Of course, who could resist the adorable tennis-inspired collection at Hermès? It makes me think of Jordan Baker, the tomboy semi-love-interest in The Great Gatsby.
Ain’t it CUTE?! Here’s some real-life inspiration (this is about the time I started to get irritated with Polyvore).
We have a simple tank dress under a long cardigan-style vest. A belt at the hips mimics the twenties’ roaring dropped waistline. The colour palette is kept fresh, bright, and sporty. Throw in a low embellished headband to add more flapper to your life.
And there we have it! Three examples of three very different variations on the same trend. Let me know what you think!
