Phil Mickelson’s Masters Triumph
In an era when mistresses are more popular than wives, the 2010 Masters was a bit of fresh air. Because it was more than golf this time.
You-Know-Who’s return was all the media seemed to care about leading up to the first tee shot. Had the media directed their attention to Mr. Phil Mickelson, everyone would’ve got a glimpse at a truly great person.
This is a person, who having heard of retired NFL player Conrad Dobler and family struggling to pay their medical bills (a problem by the way, the NFL and their $7 billion a year revenue needs to address) offered to send their daughter Holli Dobler, to Miami University in Ohio. And did. Class act.
This man also has been very involved with charitable events and even started his own charity, along with his wife Amy, called “Birdies For the Brave”. This is an organization that supports troops injured in combat. It even helps send surviving children of fallen soldiers to college. Class act personified.
And to give you a hint as to how smart this man is, here you go. A few years ago, he and fellow golfer Corey Pavin, went to Japan for a charity golf event. When it was over with, there was a dinner held for them to show appreciation. Corey Pavin stepped up to the podium and said simply, “thanks for having me”. Remember this is Japan now. Non-English speaking Japan. Next, Phil comes up to the podium and gives a 90-second thank you speech, IN JAPANESE!!!!! When asked by a friend who came along on the trip, when he learned “that”, Phil replied, “earlier….today”. Unbelievable, huh? Not really when you consider the person we’re talking about.
So when it was announced on May 20, 2009, that his wife Amy had breast cancer, you couldn’t help but get a lump in your throat. Only to have that lump reappear on July 6, 2009, when it was discovered that his mother also had breast cancer. They are both currently still battling this wretched disease.
That’s why at the last round of the Masters, when Lefty sank the birdie on the 18th hole, it was as beautiful and heartfelt a moment as I’ve ever seen in sports. Amy you see, was not able to attend the first 3 rounds because of her illness. But on that final day she was able to come and watch her husband win the biggest golf tournament in the world for her. And if you don’t think it was for her, then go back and watch the tape. Phil walked straight to his wife and their embrace told the tale.
So in this era, where mistresses are more popular than wives, I would like to thank Phil “Lefty” Mickelson for restoring morals and class to this sport. I mean the guy simply loves his wife and family. And once again, class act.
And it was also nice to write an article about the 2010 Masters without mentioning You-Know-Who’s name.
