Murfreesboro's public transportation "Rover" plans free day

Murfreesboro’s public transportation system, Rover, will offer a free-ride day Thursday to celebrate its third anniversary, Murfreesboro Transportation Director Dana Richardson said.

“We encourage everyone to come out and ride Rover,” Richardson said. “We want people to experience the safe, clean, convenient transportation of our green Rover buses.”

The service is also targeting those who use their cars most of the time, he added,  because of the gas and energy savings and greenhouse gas emissions that can be saved.

All Rover buses are wheelchair-accessible and bike racks are offered for customers who ride their bikes to a Rover bus stop, put their bikes on the bike rack and then ride the bus to a stop close to their destinations, he said. From there they finish their trip by bicycle.

“This time of year when the weather is usually nice it’s good exercise to combine riding the bus with bike riding,” he said.

Rover will be part of the 2010 Earth Day Celebration on Murfreesboro’s Civic Plaza in downtown Murfreesboro Saturday, April 24, from 10 a.m. until 2 p.m.

“We will have an informational booth set up and a bus will be parked near the library for those who have never been on one of ours before,” Murfreesboro’s assistant transportation director Nellie Patton said.

Rover will also be part of MTSU’s Alternative Transportation Day Monday from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. on the knoll outside Keathly University Center. An information table and a Rover bus will again be on hand.

On Tuesday, Murfreesboro Mayor Tommy Bragg will be a special guest on Rover from 8:10 to 9 a.m. and WGNS-AM radio will be broadcasing live from the bus.

Visit the Rover section of the city’s web site (under Transportation Department) or call 615-217-6837 for Rover bus schedules and other pertinent information.

Adult one-way fares are $1 per trip; most other fares are 50 cents for children, disabled individuals and older adults.  Transfers are free.  Tickets are available at Murfreesboro City Hall or riders can pay by providing exact change ($1 for each one-way trip) to each ROVER bus driver.
