MTSU loses in a hitter’s duel (Raiders impress despite loss)

The Blue Raiders lost a barn-burner last night, falling to Austin Peay 19-13.

Obviously pitching wasn’t the highlight of the evening.  Nor was defensive play in general. The highlight is the fact that these guys can flat out hit the ball.  Seventeen hits total, with Blake McDade leading the way with a 4 for 4 night and 3 runs scored.  Also carrying a big bat and trying to take the cover off the ball was Justin Guidry with 3 hits and 5 RBI’s.

Unfortunately, great nights at the plate and equally bad nights on the mound usually places you in the loss column, which was the case Wednesday night at Reese Smith Jr. Field. I’m sure the last thing in the world Coach Peterson expected going into this one would be pulling his starting pitcher in the 3rd inning.

And it just didn’t get any better.  In all, the Blue Raiders used eight different pitchers while giving up 22 hits to the Governors.  There were also 12 runs scored in a 2 inning span.  Ouch!

But let me remind you that this is an exciting team that knows how to swing a bat.  And you can bet that when Florida International rolls into town this weekend for a three-game series, Coach Peterson will have these young men ready to play.  I personally will have a close eye on the mound to see if our pitching staff has control of their stuff early and stays ahead in the count.  If so, we will be celebrating this weekend in a Blue Raider way.

Come out and support these guys if you can and enjoy the first class amenities at Reese Smith Jr. Field.  Friday and Saturday night’s games start at 6 p.m. and Sunday’s is at 12 p.m.

Let’s send the Golden Panthers back to Florida with sad faces and three more conference losses
