Jazzfest on the Square: May 7th (Murfreesboro Music)
Donald Brown, nationally known jazz pianist, will headline the 14th Annual Main Street JazzFest May 7 from 6 to 10:30 p.m. and May 8 from 11 a.m. to 10 p.m. on the public square in Murfreesboro.
An alumnus of Art Blakey’s Jazz Messengers, Donald Brown’s music combines firm roots in blues and Hard Bop with dashes of Rhythm and Blues and Gospel. He’s has been the arranger for such pop standards as Killing Me Softly for jazz quartet. A lyricist as well as an instrumentalist, Brown’s latest works feature singer Harold Mabern.
Bridgestone-Firestone will once again sponsor the Friday Night Jazz Jam featuring Rutherford County High School Jazz Bands. For many high school students, this offers an opportunity to perform before a live audience.
JazzFest performances range from local jazz talent (including performances by the Middle Tennessee State University Jazz Ensemble and the Rutherford All County High School Jazz Band along with well-known regional groups and national headline performances each year.
On the main stage early Saturday, the lineup will include the All-County High School Jazz Band and the MTSU Jazz Ensemble as well as local jazz artists throughout the day and the 64-piece U.S. Army Ground Forces Jazz Guardians will take the stage at 7 p.m.
The Kroger Stage will include other high school jazz bands from the Middle Tennessee area, several college groups, and one or two surprises throughout the day.
Saturday afternoon, students and others interested in jazz performance are invited to participate in an interactive Jazz Clinic featuring headlining artist Donald Brown. Part of the partnership with the MTSU Music Department, the event is facilitated by department faculty.
JazzFest will feature a special children’s area, dedicated to activities which are fun and entertaining for younger children. In the Kid’s Alley children will have the opportunity to touch and play musical instruments encouraging an appreciation of the art of music, scale a climbing wall, play in and on several inflatables, draw, color, learn and have their faces painted.
Returning this year is the Garden Mart; a place to “jazz up your garden” with unique garden art, accessories, and container plantings.
The Jazz Oasis featuring libations and dozens of traditional festival food vendors will be available throughout the vent.
