Earth Day Celebration at Civic Plaza on April 24th
A record number of visitors are expected to attend Murfreesboro’s ninth annual Earth Day Celebration April 24 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. on the city’s Civic Plaza, 111 W. Vine St.
Organizers are expecting even more to attend the event than last year, making the annual Earth Day an extravaganza that offers a wide variety of completely free activities for young and old alike.
There will be free hot dogs, popcorn and drinks, brochures on earth-friendly conservation practices, door prizes and a record number of information booths. The Children’s Discovery Center will be on hand with activities for children and Murfreesboro’s public transportation system, Rover, will maintain an information booth. The service will offer a free day on the Thursday previous, the actual April 22 Earth Day.
Rutherford County Environmental Education Program, in partnership with MaxShred, a locally owned on-site document shredding company, will also offer a free local shred day from 10 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. in the in the parking area of Rutherford County Courthouse. Visitors can drive through the inner circle of the parking lot and volunteers will unload items to be shredded. The event is for households only and documents to be shredded are limited to two banker boxes. Protect your identity and support recycling at the same time.
TVA, its Green Power Switch program and MED are all major sponsors of the event.
This program makes available to consumers electricity produced by cleaner, greener and renewable sources like wind power, solar and methane gas.
The TVA region includes all of Tennessee, a portion of southern Kentucky, the northern sections Alabama, Mississippi and Georgia and smaller parts of North Carolina and Virginia.
Murfreesboro’s Urban Environmental Department will continue its tradition of offering trees to visitors free of charge. This year, Urban Environmental Director Cynthia Holloway said white oak, white swamp oak and red oak trees will be available on a first come, first served basis. Trees will be in one gallon-containers.
Returning this year to provide entertainment are Murfreesboro’s Steel-de-Boro band and Creative Rhythm, a local percussion ensemble. New this year are performances by an MTSU jazz ensemble and local musicians Larry Pinkerton and Chris Shofner.
Also on tap is the much-anticipated return engagement of Murfreesboro Electric Department’s (MED) mascot Louie the Lightning Bug. MED and representatives from the Tennessee Valley Authority will provide information and sign-ups for the authority’s Green Power Switch program.
Also on hand will be the Pillsbury Dough Boy (General Mills, Inc.’s Pillsbury is a major event sponsor) as will the company’s sustainability mascot Mr. Wegs (Water, Electricity, Gas and Solid Waste).
MED personnel will be on hand to help explain the program and sign up residential and commercial green power customers. Other major sponsors are the City of Murfreesboro, Kroger, Inc., Lewis Brothers Bakery, Murfreesboro City Schools and MaxShred.
