Bad Decisions… What does it take to get their act together?

Once again, we as sports fans are confronted with yet another “alleged” assault on a female in a bar. And it seems the Pittsburgh Steelers are still on the clock lending one more of theirs to this circus.

Fresh off the heals of another “alleged” sexual assault by the one and only Ben Roethlisberger, comes the uplifting story out of Orlando that involves Santanio Holmes, a bar, a beverage glass and a woman’s face.

First off all, the innocent until proven guilty theme applies here. I don’t want to crucify these guys before the judicial system has run it’s course. No matter how heinous the allegations, it’s just the way it is. But what I can and will crucify these guy for is bad judgement.

Time after time, we (the money spending sports fan) see our heroes get knocked off their “Kingly Pedestals” due to bad judgement (a.k.a. bad decisions). Take Big Ben. No doubt he is a really good quarterback, but an awful decision maker. Twice now he has put himself in a position to leave room for question about his actions. His coaches and the owners paying his $102,000,000 contract aren’t scratching their heads, they’re clubbing them with hammers. I would imagine their inner-self is asking questions like this; “Why in the world is our 28 year old franchise quarterback with 2 Superbowl rings bar-hopping in an unknown college town?” Or simply, “where have we gone wrong?”

I’m not saying that these guys should practice the ways of the Tibetan Monks, but if you’re binge-drinking until early morning hours in a second-rate V.I.P. room that you’ve instructed bouncers “only females allowed”, then go into a bathroom with an inebriated 20 year old female while one of your boys stands guard at the door, you’ve just made a world-class bad decision and opened the door for speculation that you probably deserve. (And if you’re doubting Big Ben’s ability to binge drink with the best of em, just Google image search his name. Hard to think this guy’s worthy of a $102,000,000 contract.)

Then comes Santanio Holmes. A bar glass smashed into a woman’s face? Then last but not least the bribe to not press charges. There goes two bad judgement calls.

I guess it’s just an ego thing. Maybe when a woman says she’d like an autograph, that’s really all she wants. Probably hard to believe if you’re a former Superbowl M.V.P. I mean if a woman looks at you in a bar she must be star-struck and want to go home with you, right? Sorry to inform your ego Mr. Holmes but we could travel the land from coast to coast and women would no more know your face than mine. Perhaps that’s why YOU had to tell the woman who YOU were after YOU “lost control” of your glass.

What makes these two Pittsburgh Steelers’ actions so bad is that they were crimes against women. Violent, felonious crimes. Had Big Ben or Santanio beat up a drunk redneck harassing a woman, we would all be lined up to buy their jerseys. Hard to believe guys on “Kingly Pedestals” could attack a woman. But what are the pedestals made of? Empty beer boxes? Empty liquor bottles? Kind of easy to see how those pedestals can crumble, isn’t it?

Let me say I hope these “alleged” incidents aren’t true. For the sake of the women in relation to the crimes.

We Tennessee sports fans take allegations like this very seriously. We love our moms. We love our sisters. We love our girlfriends and wives.

And we also remember a day not too long ago when we were grilling out and lighting the fuses on our Fourth of July fireworks with friends and family when we got the awful news that our hero #9 was dead. The weeks that proceeded showed us bad judgement after bad judgement on his part.

We as Tennessee sports fans would hope that the grim consequences to #9′s bad decisions would serve as a guideline or a memo if you will, to all other athletes in the sporting community.

Unfortunately is seems as if the Steelers haven’t received this memo.
